For local spies, we use the enemy's people. For internal spies we use the enemy's officials. For double spies we use the enemy's spies. For dead spies we use agents to spread misinformation to the enemy. For living spies, we use agents to return with reports.

In the business world, local guides are industry sources.
Industry sources are periodicals, trade journals, web-based information services, etc. My associate used to secured his informaton from Journalists who has seen the opposition's product in beta mode. Or going over to some of the consultants that has seen and uses his opposition's new products. |

It appears that Sun Tzu and I agree somewhat as to what and where spies should be allocated to.

well, this passage makes me wish i had read ahead before posting to a passage before. regardless, this is but an explanation of the 5 spy types mentioned earlier. it is an important and necessary step to give definitions, and not just names of the spy types.

Sun Wu is telling us that a Wise General knows how to take full advantage of the people within his sphere of influence and to use these same people to help further the interests of the wise General's own country.
Local spies, internal spies, and double spies, each have something important in common. They are already "within" the territory or mind set or information loop within the targeted country. This means that their credibility is already established with their colleagues. And it is this fact, perhaps more than any other, that makes these three types of spies extremely dangerous if they end up being coopted and 'flipped' by a hostile country. The Robert Hansen spy case is a good example. Western Intelligence agencies often will seed reputable news organizations with disinformation in the full expectation that the so-called 'news-story' will be repeated in the media. This is a modern day example of a "dead spy." During the Cold War, many Americans who traveled behind the Iron curtain, often found themselves being debriefed prior to and after their return journey. This is an example of a non-professional living spy. BingFa

Sun Tzu said, "For local spies, we use the enemy's people. For internal spies we use the enemy's officials. For double spies we use the enemy's spies. For dead spies we use agents to spread misinformation to the enemy, For living spies, we use agents to return with reports."
The general knows that when information comes from various sources that it can be verified for accuracy. The combined information is foreknowledge. If the general can trust this foreknowledge she can outmaneuver the opposition. |

Gathering valuable information does not necessarily need to be difficult. A wealth of value can be gained form simply attending trade shows and reading periodicals. Of course trusted individuals that possess such information are the best sources. They should be coddled for the purpose of gaining intelligence about our opponent. |

It's helpful to begin to undesatand the five types of spies: living spies, dead spies, local spies, internal spies and double spies.
I would think and agree that a type of local spies could be a trade journal or a similar type of publication. I consult similar types of information as I revamp my career goals and aspirations. Pawn12 |
