Therefore, weapons will not be blunted, and gains will be intact. These are the principles of planning attacks.

"Therefore, weapons will not be blunted, and gains will be intact. These are the principles of planning attacks."-Sun-tzu.

If one plans attacks and defeats the enemy without fighting, then one didn't need to use his weapons and therefore they can stay preserved for when they are most needed.

Accidentally posted part of this in my previous response. Oops.

In winning, it is important to keep yourself strong. Using strategy can minimize the various costs of winning.

The idea here is to plan, plan, plan so as to minimize the number of inflicted casualties if at all possible.

In the quoted excerpt Sun Tzu is indirectly alluding to the necessity of remaining "sharp" by applying strength against weakness and thereby increasing the liklihood that any engagement will be as brief as possible.

Locking up the victory as quickly and as effectively as possible is a hallmark of great generalship.

This is the idealistic goal of the "fighting without fighting".

Combatting with the least amount of force deployed w/o burning out your team and resources. Also keeping the gains complete.

Keeping your team and resources intact and injury-free is part of
the "fighting without fighting" approach.

You will not waste your resources, and you will not waste any gained resources before you destroy them.

Sun Tzu said, “Therefore, weapons will not be blunted, and gains will be intact. These are the principles of planning attacks.”

If the General uses wisdom and if the army is prepared, the objectives can be taken entirely and long term victory can be achieved.

The above paragraphs remind me one of my favorite scenes from the movie. This one from “Enter the Dragon”, when a man asks a character played by Bruce Lee:

- What is your fighting style?

And the answer comes:

- Fighting without fighting.

When planning try to make your plans so as to make as little waste as possible and to take as much as possible with as little destruction as possible. This is an easy to remember sentence that summs up very nicely the main purposes that should be sought when planning.

Who wouldn't want to gain everything the opposition holds while retaining everything they hold in perfect condition. Another gain vs cost situation. I'm getting this feeling that I'm repeating myself.

I feel that this passage mean to move forward while not depleating ones resources. I believe it also speaks to building on past victories....seemlessly moving forward by removing the root reason for conlict.

I can only scratch the surface on this one as I find it's message to run deep...but I will attempt. This passage appeals to the "way". It also speaks heavily to the chapter on assessments. I find it also lens itselfto fundamental laws of logic and fairness.

Battles that are fought at the strategy level can remove some of the carnage from our every day lives. Battles that can logically be fought first in the "temple" have higher probalities of success.

If a battle is fought in terms of superior strategy reasonable opponents will not engage themselves in fruitless battles...dulling weapons and weakening the army (or resolve).

This type of battle then lends itself more readily to a warrior who possesses better information skills and strategic acumen.

Opponents that are not destroyed in battle can become allies but this requires fairness and a non neccessary destruction attitude.

I believe greatness is built on these principals. I really wish I could apply these principals at work as I tend to get beat up there.

If you attack plans (Ch'i) you will be able to take anything without having to do battle. This is the idealistic situation.

One who excels... can take advantage without engaging battle, capturing other people's fortified cities without attacking them, If this can be done there will be no need to dull your weapons.

When direct conflict is avoided you will have a better chance of preserving your gains.

I see this statement as two fold. For to win a battle without the use of weapons:

The most beneficial to both sides would be a diplomatic approach to meet a mutual agreement and understanding.

The Second you have an overwhelming undisputed claim, an argument that cannot be revoked. Militarily this may translate that you have such an overwhelming force that the enemy may give up without a battle.

Attacks should be planned to accomplish victory while preserving weapons (resources) and sustaining gains (territory, resources). Success in warfare is measured by victory but not on a scale of death and destruction.
