Out of all of the chapters, this chapter is a toughie.

/// *** The principles of warfare are: There are dispersive ground, marginal ground, contentious ground, open ground, intersecting ground, critical ground, difficult ground, surrounded ground, and deadly ground. ***///

This chapter is about two things
(1) recognizing nine types of situations that one might face in his endeavor to succeed.

(2) how to respond to any of those nine situations.

This chapter relates to the different types of terrain or types of situations that you can find yourself involved with.

During planning session, the Supreme Strategist General (SSG) is always preparing for those nine scenarios.

In the battlefield, he anticipates for any of the nine scenarios and uses it to his advantage.

Sun Tzu said, "The principles of warfare are: There are dispersive ground, marginal ground, contentious ground, open ground, intersecting ground, critical ground, difficult ground, surrounded ground, and deadly ground."

The general knows that when his army is on a particular type of terrain that his forces will meld with the forces of the ground and that the nine types of ground are actually a definition of the generals forces circumstances as they relate to the forces of the ground.

It looks like we are in for a lessom on the different types of grounds. There are nine principal types from this introduction.

Conflict takes many different forms. Each form requires a new tactic with which to confront it. It is tantamount to the battle itself that we are familiar with as many different forms of conflict as possible.
