Throw your troops into situations where there is no escape, where they will die before escaping. When they are about to die, what can they not do? They will exert their full strength.

This is what a smart strategist one does when he and his team is placed in a state of the "Deadly Ground".

The focus is not to get yourself into it.

When one's life is at risk there is nothing that that individual will not do to save it.

Sun Tzu said, "Throw your troops into situations where there is no escape, where they will die before escaping. When they are about to die, what can they not do? They will exert their full strength."

The general knows that desperation will bring out the best in the best of her men and women. And that in this type of situation the others will follow their lead. A few hundred troops can hold off thousands if there is cohesiveness and if the ground and heaven work as their allies.

Is this necessary///

If we know that this approach works under certain circumstances do we consciously have to create it.

Or would leadership that is in accord with the way and heaven and ground naturally find success irregardless.

I would see this appraoch as one way of winning but not the only way.

Conflict can be perilous. I think the general maxim found in this passage is to let go of hope. Gracian said "Hope is the great falsifier". Hope has the tendency to tee you up for disappointment. So when one is in dire circumstances let it go and enact your plan full force.

If you aren't afraid of dying, there is nothing you can't achieve.
