12.007 If one gains victory in battle and is successful...

If one gains victory in battle and is successful in attacks, but does not exploit those achievements, it is disastrous. This is called waste and delay.

The consummate strategist is in position to benefit from this effott

He is always prepared to follow through upon the outputs of his attempts to use the fire &/or water.

If one has the opposition on the run, it is important to crush him immediately. It would be a waste to let the opposition escape and get another chance to reload and reposition themselves.

Once a successful attack is made, use every advantage that has revealed itself. If an enemy were to flee, chase him down. If a valuable commodity or resource can be found through the ashes, take what you can.

The Supreme Field General gains total victory when he uses each of incremental wins to build up to a larger victory. He does not waste any of his achievements.

Sun Tzu said, "If one gains victory in battle and is successful in attacks, but does not exploit those achievements, it is disastrous. This is called waste and delay."

The general should not allow his troops lives to be spent in vain. “Long Term Victory” must be the goal for the ruler who chooses to fight a war!

Is it just me, or has anyone else notice from this point on this chapter stops talking about fire tactics and insteads talks about something more apporpiate in an earlier part of the book, like ch. 2?

Yes, good point Captain_John.

This phrase stresses the importance of acting on unexpected opportunities that are likely to present themselves after a victorious campaign. Those opportunities are sometimes fleeting, and to not act on them is wasteful and sometimes tragic.

The victory that the U.S. won in the 1991 Persian Gulf war is a good example of this. The sound and humiliating defeat of Saddam Hussein at the end of that war presented an historic opportunity for the U.S. to act directly against his murderous regime on behalf of the subsequent uprisings in the Kurdish north and the Shia south. Sadly however, the U.S. assumed that if the uprisings played themselves out on their own that Saddam would be finished within a few months anyway.

A year later, the bulk of the U.S. troops were gone from the Persian Gulf, the uprisings had been effectively crushed by the Iraqi Republican Guard, and Saddam would remain in power for another decade. The opportunities of 1991 were gone.

The confidence that comes with small successes should not damper our resolve for complete victory. If we glory in our success during the conflict the enemy may take us off guard and exploit the situation to his advantage. We must be thorough in our endeavor to circumvent our opponent.

Saving steps

I once heard a fellow say that most farmers try to save steps when they work. I took this to mean that because their work was hard enough they choose not to unnecessarily make it any more trying.

I would think that because we fight according to a plan that is built upon proven logic that we would not pass up reasonable opportunities that are not traps.
