12.009 If it is not advantageous, do not move...

If it is not advantageous, do not move; if there is no gain, do not use troops; if there is no danger, do not do battle.

One should be observing for the possibility of gaining advantages, before implementing any attack. Be aware of traps (i.e., bait and switch, etc).

If there is no advantage in moving into an area, taking an area, or destroying an area, LEAVE IT ALONE. There would be no point in wasting time and effort in mutilating something of no value.\

The supreme general always know all of the technical scenarios that can give him or her the best advantage. He is constantly aware of deceptive bait and switch maneuver by the enemy.

Sun Tzu said, "If it is not advantageous, do not move; if there is no gain, do not use troops; if there is no danger, do not do battle."

The general knows when to sit tight and prepare. When the troops are wound up it may be difficult to contain their movement but the general has the wisdom to not let their emotions control the maneuvering of the forces.

We are not in a contest to prove our manhood. Conflict should be about one thing: enriching our position. Our position should be more favorable subsequent to conflict. We must be certain of that before we engage in any battle.

This has been a tough concept for me. I leaned about this idea while in the world of work. At one point I was taking on jobs that were not putting me ahead financially. Just to say I was was working was more of the payoff for me.

The problem was that I was tiring myself out and really working for at best a small break even. It felt more like I was at the the bad end of someone elses trap. Today i can see some of the Sun Tzu's principals at work but they are more lined up against me than working in my favor.

At this point there needs to be some reasonable pay off for me to engage in these type of campaigns. One of my inlaws taught me a very important trick during this time. He would always have his break even point made or exceeded befor one of his promotional events would happen.

What this meant in effect was that when the doors opened to one of his shows he was always fighting for profit vs survival. I always thought that this was pretty smart.

I have also found this to be an ongoing problem for me particularily as it pertains to work. Where I live there just does not seem to be good opportunities that I can access. A problem that I can not seem to answer with some satisfaction. It's hard at times to stay detached when most of me just is very angry and frustrated.

I guess I'll just have to "keep on trucking" as my uncle would say.
