13.014 If a spy's activities are leaked before they...

If a spy's activities are leaked before they are to begin, the spy and those who know should be put to death.

Pretty obvious!

It is important that the intelligence coordinator is the only one who knows the identities of his intelligence operators.

ANY compromise in security should be punished with extreme prejudice! Security leaks should never be tolerated under any condition.

IN most cases, the id of spies are handled with care by their spymasters. Any leaks means immediate death for that spy.

I do not agree with Master Wu. I find his perspectibve to be rather harsh.

His sentence of death was probably written to emphasize the crtiticality of the spying operation and to reinforce discipline amongst the ranks.

A spy's operation can be leaked through no fault of the spy himself. The leaker should be punished, not the spy.

Sun Tzu said, "If a spy's activities are leaked before they are to begin, the spy and those who know should be put to death."

The general knows that he must protect his force’s security while he tries to breach the oppositions.

It is easy for the average reader today to dismiss this particular quote because of the harsh wording in its second half. The very notion of killing your spies the moment that their activities are known to your opponent seems to have little applicability in our everyday lives. But a closer reading of the first half of this quote might reveal a different interpretation.

Sun Tzu is not just emphasizing the importance of ruthlessly protecting the secrecy of your spies' activities, but he may also be reminding us that opportunities to gain vital intelligence are perishable, not permanent.

I guess you could simply put to death the 'identity' of the spy in question if the disclosure came about due to unfortunate circumstance rather than incompetence.

However, the judicious 'leaking' of information you have can be used to manipulate the enemy's behaviour.

Letting them know we know they are at a certain location may be enough to make them withdraw. Letting them think we think they are at a certain location (where they aren't) may lead them to become over confident and make a false move.

Procuring sensitive information is worthless if we do not impose strict standards on its confidentiality. Otherwise the expense, energy and resources exhausted in our efforts to gain this information will be wasted.

Games

I believe that killing a spy can be more figurative than literal although it can be both. It can depend on the degree of and the value of the game being played.

I would think that war games can and do have final conclusions in terms of individual and collective lives.

Business games have conclusions as well but are more accurately measured in terms of careers or opportunities.

I believe that the the conclusions of employing spies is more directly proportional to the type of game that is being played. than the continum of conclusions that can be deduced from playing a game in the first place.
