You must seek enemy spies. Bribe them, and instruct and retain them. Therefore, double spies can be obtained and used.

Based on my reading, there are two types of spies. Those who does it for their political belief. The other does it for financial reasons.

If a spy is caught and converted to a double agent. It is usually for better financial terms that he/she got from their previous employer. At the same time, that spy can never be fully trusted by their new employer.

At any time, they can be used as a sacrificed pawn for the higher cause of the employer.

This type of action has been used in many wars when converting a spy to a double agent.

Double agents are great for sending disinformation to your opponent. It creates the potential for setting traps, and luring him away from your weak points.

This is the process for employing double agents. Most enemy agents are turned into double agents either through their greed or their disbelief of their cause.

Sun Zi recognized the true value of securing an enemies' spy and flipping them.

Part of this value is derived from the fact that one can discern any number of things once it is determined what it is that the other side is keen on obtaining. This points to the enemies' motives, plans, and possible intentions.

Having a double spy on the payroll enables one to craft the perceptions and reality of the other side. It also provides one with an excellent chance to send the other side off on wild goose chases wasting valuable resources and time.

In the early stages of running a double spy, it usually is advisable to provide them with good intel because this helps cement the double spy's relationship with their superiors in their home country.

Sun Tzu said, "You must seek enemy spies. Bribe them, and instruct and retain them. Therefore, double spies can be obtained and used."

Spies save lives.

The general knows that money spent on intelligence is money well spent. If the spies can focus on key targets then the general can use more precision and less fire to get her job done.

This aphorism brings to mind a criticism that the spy novelist John LeCarre made about Ian Fleming's popular James Bond:

"The really interesting thing about Bond is that he would be what I would call the ideal defector. Because if the money was better, the booze freer and women easier over there in Moscow, he'd be off like a shot. Bond, you see, is the ultimate prostitute."

Money and other tangible tokens of exchange are certainly the most persuasive means of recruiting enemy spies. And a wise commander will also understand that his own spies can be bought by his opponent if the price is right.

"When there is whisper of an enemy spy in your camp, order all of your soldiers back to their tents and he will be instantly apprehended." Catching the double spy is the catalyst for utilizing all other kinds of spies.

Just as our endeavor is to obtain information about our enemy, we must be aware that our enemy is doing the same against us. Information about our own efforts should be heavily guarded. If we have the opportunity to deceive our enemy by leaking false information, then we should seize it.

Espionage 101

I never really thought of spying in these terms. It seems more like a business transaction that anything else.

I was always more of the opinion that most spies were connected to their causes, believed in them and were trained not to turn double.

I can now see how easy it could be to flip a spy . One would only need to offer the biggest bang for the dollar.

even a pawn can topple a king
