The Art of War is not only confined to the use of war, but can also be interpreted to suit other circumstances and situations.
Furthermore, The Art of War is not the bible for everything. There IS always an exception to every rule and every law of the universe, hence the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

The Art of War in itself is a guide book towards how to analyze and predict the outcomes of any given situation by providing simple rules that govern the way people should react towards any given situation.

Do not judge or analyze the book with a narrow point of view.

I've often thought that people take too much liberty in taking The Art of War into areas that Sun Tzu was not writing about. What do you think?

Hi Duncan,

What areas are you refering to in particular?

Do you feel the text is most approriate to situations where there is potential for conflict?

Thanks,

Think you are in war with Sun Tzu (your opponent), as simple as that. Should you have a better strategy than Sun Tzu, you win.

I think that the The Way implies a man's life purpose. Read the Way of the Superior Man to understand what I mean.

A man has to find his purpose so that everything that he does becomes aligned with that purpose. His input in his work\career, relationship, familiy, friends, hobbies and everything that he does must all serve his life purpose, so that he is able to give his gifts and strengths to those around him.

Men these days have limitless options, and you see men my age in their twenties undertaking shallow activities. They live for their weekend binge-drinking, using drugs, partying three to four times a week, and mostly not being real adult men.

This will bring short-term gratification, but in the long-term, at a later stage in life, you will become depressed, because you think that there's nothing to life except the life that everyone else around you is living as well.

Finding your purpose in life is therefore an important matter. I've found my life purpose through meditation, but others find it by talking to other people, work or in any other way find it naturally. It involves an activity which is doing something that serves you, nobody else. Then, you will find your life purpose, your Way.

Emperor,

I think I can agree with you. Finding the purpose of life is important to keep us alive. My way of finding this purpose is to let my self alone. Anytime when you see I am alone, I am thinking.

The Way is what causes the people to have the same thinking as their superiors; they may be given death, or they may be given life, but there is no fear of danger and betrayal ***///

When the team and its leader(s) share the absolute vision. They will work as one. Regardless whether it is a life and death situation, they possess any worry about danger and betrayal.

Does the sharing of the same vision guarantee success? Nope!
But it can be a deciding factor.

A good ceo-general leads with action, not just words. The most effective way to prove your leadership, to show character, is not to tale about it , but set the example. One leads by action. If he treats his employees with benevolence, justice and fairness and installs confidence in them, his organization will be loyalty to him. They will walk to the end of the earth with him.

Personally, I have seen that sharing of vision with sport teams, small military teams & small product development groups.

Very well put!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Way through Detachment, Patience and Yielding

The Way cannot be grabbed, but can only be attained through detachment, because it is the Tao, and is subject to its own timing.

Finding The Way is like trying to catch a fish by pulling too tightly on the line. If one just relaxes the line, the fish will come closer on its own accord. Life is a strange thing – when all is looking down, it blows you a kiss, but when all is looking up, it slaps your face!

Finding The Way should happen naturally, because the more one consciously tries, the more one will become anxious about it, and the more one will fail. One needs to come in line with it, with its rhythm and timing, and focus on getting oneself ready for it. The more one thinks about it, the further it is, but the more one forgets about it, the closer it comes. It can only be attained through detachment, patience and yielding, as well as enduring all hardships through endless endurance that only comes from within.

^ but we can't apply that in a real battle, from that word by word. but simply in what we understood from that excerpt.
