In case of deep trouble, during a prolonged war, don't expect others to come to help to get you out of it. You're on you own.

The army is the physical embodiment of the general's will to be imposed on the enemy. If your opponent has an army and you don't, you are at his will. If you have no army to be your hand of influence you are doomed to failure and subjugation.

This stresses that your plans and actions must be laid out before your morale and equipment conditions drop, and a swift victory must be made. You are weakest to an attack immediately after you yourself have attacked.

If an army is too weak to protect weaknesses that have been attacked, suffering and defeat will be unavoidable.

No one will be able to prevent it.

Don't expect good advice to be a replacement for bullets, beans, and gas. If you are spent - that's it. You can't force a military solution if you cannot keep your army supplied. You better start looking for other options.

There's an interesting scene in A Bridge Too Far. A group of German officers are asking their General what they should do. His answer is, "End the war of course!" His officers laugh and reply that he has never lost a battle. To this he replies, "I'm still young." He understands that the armed forces and Germany are spent. He realises that wisdom cannot replace supplies and failed morale.
